WINNECONNE, Wis. - The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams ran against an extremely tough field on Saturday morning at the UW-Oshkosh Kollege Town Invite. The men's race featured a total of 30 teams and 351 runners, while the women's race had 32 teams participate with 353 runners. Although Rockford did not qualify for a team score, the Regents still had multiple individuals post season best times.
Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) led the way for the RU men's team. Werkheiser led all Regents finishing the 8k in 127th place with a season best time of 28:07.8. Newton also ran well crossing the finish line in 30:30.5 to finish in 254th place.
The women's team was led by the trio of Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.), Elina Lynge Wagner (Hvidovre, Denmark) and Tracy Wang (Lianyungang, China). Collins was the top female finisher for Rockford, as she crossed the finish line in 27:27.5 to place 232nd. Wagner set a new season best by nearly 3 minutes in the 6k, finishing the race in 29:19.3 and placing 295th. Wang was the final runner for the Regents placing 333rd with a time of 31:44.1.
The RU cross country teams will be back in action in two weeks on Saturday, October 28 at the NACC Championships. This year's conference championships will be hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin with the men's race staring at 11 a.m. followed by the women's race at noon.
