ROSCOE, Ill. - The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams began their seasons on Friday at the Beloit Opener. Although the Regents did not record a team score, there were multiple individuals who ran extremely well and new set personal best times.
The RU men's team had four individuals participate in the 6k race on Friday. The top performer for the Regents was junior Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.). Devant turned in the highest overall finish for Rockford when he placed fifth with a personal best time of 21:25.0. Fellow junior Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) destroyed his previous best time in the 6k by over a minute when he crossed the finish line in 22:26.4 to place thirteenth. Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.) also both ran well finishing sixteenth with a time of 22:58.8 and twenty-sixth with a time of 25:57.4.
The women's team was led by the duo of Tracy Wang (Lianyungang, China) and Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.). Wang got her season off to an excellent start with a personal best time in the 5k as she crossed the finish line in 27:11.9 to place twenty-fifth. Buechner also ran very well as she placed twenty-sixth and lowered her personal best time in the 5k by over a minute when she completed the race in 27:49.7.
The RU men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next Friday, September 8 at the Spartan Classic. The meet has a scheduled start time of 5:45 PM.
