Regents Finish Season with Gritty Performance Against Grace Christian

HANCOCK, Mich. - The Regents women's volleyball team (4-25) fought hard once again, but came up just short on Saturday morning against Grace Christian University (16-8). After a tough first set, Rockford played well for the remainder of the match. The Regents came up a couple of points shy in the second set falling 26-24, but rebounded nicely to win the third set in thrilling fashion 27-25. Unfortunately the Tigers bounced back to win the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

 

  • Rockford fell 25-5 in the opening set. Despite being down 1-0, Rockford continued to fight and played extremely well over the remainder of the match.
  • The Regents held a slight lead for much of the second set. Rockford used a 4-0 run late in the second to build its largest lead thus far at 22-16. Senior Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa) and freshman Della Crain (Lena, Ill.) led the charge during that span. Hiland tallied a kill and a service ace, while Crain smashed a pair of kills. 
  • Unfortunately the Tigers responded right back with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the match at 22-22. Rockford was able to fight off one set point, but ultimately it was the Tigers who won set 26-24, and took a 2-0 lead. 
  • The third set got off to a tough start for Rockford with Grace Christian jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead. However Rockford once again showed its resolve and resilience by battling right back and scoring the next six points to grab a 9-8 advantage. Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.) led the way with five straight points off her serve, including a trio of service aces. 
  • The two schools would trade points until late in the set when Grace Christian was able to build a 21-17 lead. Rockford answered with a 4-0 run to knot the match at 21-21. Jennifer Quintas was once again at the center of the Regent rally, with three of the points coming off her serve, including a service ace.
  • Rockford had a set point at 24-23 but was turned away by the Tigers. Grace Christian then won the next two points to earn their first match point of the day. However the Regents were up to the task, spoiling the match point and knotting the set again, this time at 25-25. 
  • Rockford then closed with two straight points, ending with an Alyssa Ashford (Springfield, Ill.) kill to win the third set 27-25.
  • The fourth set was again close throughout as neither team was able to pull away until late. 
  • Midway through the set with Grace Christian clinging to a 15-14 advantage, the Tigers used a 4-0 run to open up their largest lead to that point at 19-14. Rockford scored the next two points off kills from Hiland and Crain to cut the deficit back down to just three. Unfortunately it was not meant to be, as Grace Christian closed on a 6-1 run to win the set and the match.

 

  • Della Crain finished her season with back-to-back impressive performances. Crain crushed a career-high 17 kills on Saturday after smashing 10 kills on Friday night. It was the first time this season Crain tallied double-digit kills in consecutive matches.
  • Senior Maddison Hiland hit the double-digit kill plateau for the sixth time this season with 11 kills. Hiland also added 8 digs, 2 service aces and a block to her totals.
  • Paige Carpenter (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Jennifer Quintas both played excellent defense and did an outstanding job serving. Carpenter finished with a team-high 12 digs and 3 service aces, while Quintas had 11 digs and a career-high 4 service aces.
  • Casey Sheetz (Rockford, Ill.) tallied a match-high 34 assists and Amelia Rehberg (Pecatonica, Ill.) recorded 9 digs.
