LISLE, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-19, 25-11, 25-17) on Friday night at Benedictine University. Although Rockford was unable to win a set, the Regents played well for much of the evening, pushing the Eagles in two of the three sets.

Rockford played extremely well early on, leading for the majority of the opening set. The Regents jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead thanks in part to a pair of Emily Johannes (Eau Claire, Wis.) kills. As the set wore on, Rockford continued to maintain its advantage with multiple Regents contributing. Both Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa) and McCathran Andrew (Rockford, Ill.) tallied two kills each to help put their team out in front 16-14. Unfortunately that is when things began to go south, as Benedictine went on an 11-3 run to close the set and take a 1-0 lead.

Following a tough second set, Rockford put up fight in what turned out to be the third and final set of the match. The Regents and Eagles battled back and forth in the early moments as both teams held the lead at one point. However with the match tied at 8, the Eagles ran off 11 straight points to leap out in front 19-8. Despite falling behind, the Regents continued to fight using a 6-1 run of their own to claw their way back into the match. Unfortunately it was too little too late, as the Eagles took the the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Offensively Rockford used a balanced attack with four players recording at least four kills. Freshman McCathran Andrew led the Rockford offense with a season-high 5 kills on 10 attempts. Fellow freshman Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.) was extremely efficient, recording 4 kills with 0 errors on 10 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas) directed the RU attack dishing out a match-high 18 assists.

Defensively the Regents were led by Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.) and Emily Johannes. Quintas finished with a team-high 10 digs, while Johannes tallied 9 digs.

The RU volleyball team returns to the court on Saturday, October 14 at Aurora University. The match has a scheduled start time of noon.
