BELOIT, Wis. - The Rockford University track and field teams took part in their final tune-up on Saturday at the Beloit Relays prior to next week's NACC Outdoor Championship. As a team, the RU women finished seventh and the men finished twelfth. Individually, the Regents had numerous participants set new personal records; as well as, Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) breaking the RU school record in the 400 meter hurdles and Katrina Kopfhamer (Portage, Wis.) breaking the school record in the hammer throw.
Senior Lexie Collins had yet another busy day, participating in a total of four events. Collins broke the school record by seven seconds and took seventh in the 400 meter hurdles when she crossed the finish line in 1:15.38. Collins also ran well in the 100 meter hurdles where she finished eighth with a wind-assisted time of 18.15 seconds. She then completed her day by placing 12th in the javelin with a throw of 26.19 meters and 28th in the shot put with a distance of 6.10 meters.
Freshman Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.) tallied a pair of top-five finishes in her three events. Terry's highest finish of the day came in the shot put, where she placed third with a distance of 12.70 meters. She then took fifth in the discus with a throw of 35.79 meters and 16th in the hammer with a distance of 32.84 meters.
The duo of Katrina Kopfhamer and Nicole Melson (Harvard, Ill.) also both performed well in the throwing events. Kopfhamer's top finish came in the hammer throw where she placed ninth and broke the RU record by over a meter, with a throw of 37.12 meters. She then finished 16th and set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 29.24 meters. Melson set new personal bests in all three events she participated in on Saturday. She finished 16th in the shot put, 18th in the hammer and 19th in the discus with personal best throws of 9.67 meters, 32.31 meters and 28.28 meters.
Devon Lawrence (Loves Park, Ill.) set a new personal best in all four throwing events he took part in on Saturday. Lawrence's best finish of the day came in the discus where he placed fifth with a distance of 36.40 meters. He also finished tenth in the hammer, 16th in the javelin and 18th in the shot put with respective distances of 34.26 meters, 36.11 meters and 10.54 meters.
Junior Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) recorded a pair of top-ten finishes for the men's team. Werkheiser took fifth in the 400 meter race with a time of 52.58 seconds. He then finished ninth in the 800 meter race and crossed the finish line in 2:06.80.
Fellow junior Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) also had a top-ten finish in his only individual event of the day. Devant finished seventh in the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:20.32.
Freshman Jesus Campos (Chicago, Ill.) led the Regents in the sprinting events at the Beloit Relays. Campos finished 11th in the 100 meter dash with a wind-assisted time of 11.78 seconds and 19th in the 200 meter dash with a wind-assisted time of 24.27 seconds.
Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) and Nick Thomas (Winslow, Ariz.) each also performed well and set a new personal best. Ponce Cuiriz placed 12th in the shot put with a personal best throw of 11.19 meters and 23rd in the javelin with a throw of 28.89 meters. Thomas took tenth in the discus with a throw of 32.27 meters, 11th in the shot put with a personal best distance of 11.19 meters and 15th in the javelin with a throw of 37.33 meters.
The RU track and field teams return to action next weekend at the NACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
