KENOSHA, Wis. - The Rockford University indoor track and field teams had yet another great performance on Sunday at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships. Both the men's and women's teams moved up one spot in the conference standings from where they each finished last year. The men placed seventh with 31 points, which is a 21-point improvement from last year, while the women placed eighth with 15 points, a 13-point increase over last year's total. Individually it was a stellar day for Rockford, as six school records fell and numerous people set new personal bests.
Freshman Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.) was simply outstanding in her collegiate debut on Sunday. Terry won the shot put and absolutely destroyed the Rockford University record in the process. Terry's throw of 13.30 meters was nearly 3.5 meters farther than the previous record of 9.85 meters. Additionally, her throw currently ranks as the 22nd farthest in all of NCAA Division III this season. Terry followed up her shot put performance with another excellent effort in the weight throw event. The Streator native placed seventh in the weight throw and broke her second school record of the day. Her throw of 13.39 meters was a full meter farther than the previous school record.
Senior Nicole Melson (Harvard, Ill.) also performed well in the throwing events. Her top finish of the day came in the weight throw where she placed tenth with a distance of 12.36 meters. Melson then finished thirteenth in the shot put with a throw of 9.79 meters.
Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) set a pair of personal bests on Sunday as well as breaking one school record. Collins broke the RU school record in the high jump event and placed ninth with a height of 1.41 meters. She then set a new personal best in the 400 meter dash crossing the finish line in 1:08.76 to place thirteenth.
The women's other two top-10 finishes came courtesy of the 4x400 meter relay team and distance medley relay team. The team of Lexie Collins, Maddy Pearson (Peru, Ill.), Elina Lynge Wagner (Hvidovre, Denmark) and Virginia Reed (Rockford, Ill.) combined to run in both relays. The Regents finished seventh in the 4x400 meter with a time of 4:53.33 and eighth in the distance medley relay with a time of 17:01.76.
The men's team also had numerous individuals record top-10 finishes, with the highest coming from junior thrower Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.). Johnson finished fourth in the weight throw and obliterated his own school record in the event. His throw of 14.12 meters was over 1.3 meters longer than his previous school record of 12.81 meters. Johnson then continued his excellent day with an eighth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.76 meters.
Junior Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) turned in a pair of fifth place finishes for the Regents. Devant began by setting a personal best in the high jump with a height of 1.69 meters. He then set his second personal best of the day in the mile run when he crossed the finish line in 4:40.88.
Tyrece Ahrens (Kankakee, Ill.) was the busiest Regent of the day, taking part in five individual events. His best finish came in the triple jump where he placed fifth and broke his own school record with a distance of 12.48 meters. Ahrens also scored points for the Regents in the 400 meter race when he placed sixth and crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 51.72 seconds. He then took tenth in the high jump and twelfth in the long jump with a height of 1.59 meters and a distance of 5.89 meters. His final individual event of the day was the 55 meter dash. Ahrens finished eleventh in the race and set a new personal best when he crossed the finish line 6.77 seconds.
Nathan Alldritt (Winnebago, Ill.) and Bailey Beard (Rockford, Ill.) also both performed well for Rockford. Alldritt's best performance came in the pole vault when he finished eighth with a height of 3.80 meters. Beard's top individual finish came in the high jump where he placed eleventh with a height of 1.54 meters.
Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) and Devon Lawrence (Loves Park, Ill.) did well in the shot put and weight throw events. Ponce Cuiriz set a new personal best in the weight throw and finished eighth with a distance of 11.75 meters. He then took twelfth in the shot put with a distance of 11.13 meters. Lawrence finished twelfth in the weight throw and thirteenth in the shot put with respective distances of 10.61 meters and 11.05 meters.
The men's final two top-10 finishes came in the 4x400 meter relay and the distance medley relay. The team of Jesus Campos (Chicago, Ill.), Christian Devant, Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and Bailey Beard took fourth in the distance medley relay. Rockford's time of 11:16.84 was just six seconds off the school record. The team of Tyrece Ahrens, Jesus Campos, Christian Devant and Joe Werkheiser finished sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. Rockford's time of 3:33.98 broke the school record by nearly six seconds.
