Women's Hoops Drops Tough Game to Surging Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. - The Rockford University women's basketball team (5-19, 3-16 NACC) fell 74-40 on the road Tuesday night to a very talented Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons team (18-6, 15-4 NACC). It was a tough day for the Regents as the Falcons led wire-to-wire to earn their fifth straight win and retain sole possession of second place in the NACC. The major differences in the game were the Falcons' lights-out shooting for the majority of the evening, and CUW's huge edge on the glass. The Falcons shot a scalding 50.9% from the floor compared to 27.6% shooting for the Regents. Concordia Wisconsin also outrebounded Rockford 45-26, which led to a large 20-2 advantage in second chance points. Despite everything seemingly going against the Regents, Rockford played nearly even with the Falcons in two of the four quarters. However, CUW was able to outscore Rockford 41-9 in the first and third quarters combined en route to the win.

Following an extremely difficult opening period in which Rockford trailed 23-5, the Regents rebounded with an excellent second quarter. Rockford opened the period on a 10-2 run to cut the Falcon lead back down to ten points at 25-15. Senior Virginia Reed (Rockford, Ill.) got the scoring started less than a minute into the period with her first basket of the game. Freshman Neve Yerk (Belvidere, Ill.) ended the run connecting on back-to-back jumpers to pull her team within ten. Unfortunately the Falcons closed the half with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 36-17 lead into the break.

The second half followed the exact same pattern as the first with Concordia Wisconsin controlling the third quarter, and Rockford playing even with the Falcons in the fourth. Rockford was outscored 18-4 in the third as CUW took a 54-21 advantage into the fourth. Offensively the Regents caught fire from beyond the arc in the opening moments of the final period, hitting four three-pointers in the first 5 minutes and 7 seconds. Junior Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) connected on three of the four triples with other coming off the hand of sophomore Linzy Keller (Rockford, Ill.). Unfortunately Concordia Wisconsin also found its stroke from long range, hitting a trio of threes of its own, to keep the Regents at bay en route to a 74-40 win.

Offensively the Regents were led by a trio of players. Nicole Silvers finished with a team-high 9 points, 2 steals and 1 rebound. Senior Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 assist. Linzy Keller tallied 7 points on 3-of-6 shooting and 1 rebound.

The RU women's basketball team concludes its season on Saturday, February 17 at Dominican University. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM.
