ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rylee Klema (Mendota, Ill.) earned Rockford's first award of the spring season on Tuesday when she was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week. She becomes the first RU softball player to earn a NACC weekly award since 2013, and the first player to be named the conference's pitcher of the week since the 2011 season.
Rylee Klema led the Regents to a pair of wins last week with her excellent performances inside the circle. Klema went 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average and 16 strikeouts in her two starts. She began by throwing a complete game in Rockford's 5-1 win over New Jersey City. Klema allowed just one unearned run and struck out ten in her seven innings of work. She then tossed four shutout innings and struck out six in Rockford's 9-1 five-inning win over SUNY Canton.
Klema has been one of the top pitchers in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference so far this season. The freshman leads the NACC in wins (4), starts (7), appearances (8), complete games (6), innings pitched (47.0) and strikeouts (34). She is also fifth in the conference with a 2.23 earned run average among pitchers who have thrown at least 10 innings.
The RU softball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13 against Kenyon College and Alfred State. First pitch of the day is set for 9 AM EDT.
