ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (5-35) host the Mount Mary University Blue Angels (7-19) on Friday afternoon to wrap up its season. The two teams got into a slugfest as Rockford went on to split with Mount Mary. RU won game one 6-5 before falling in game two 13-8.
The Blue Angels got out to an early 2-0 lead on the Regents coming out strong in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Rockford rebounded well as it scored two runs of its own to tie the ballgame at 2-2. Gretchen Schrubbe (Elgin, Ill.) started things off with a lead-off single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. McCathran Andrew (Rockford, Ill.) did well at the plate to hold steady and earn a walk to give Rockford runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later, with Sammi Russell (Winnebago, Ill.) at the plate, both base runners would advance on another wild pitch. Russell did well smacking a single to left field and chalking up two RBIs on the play.
The Regents kept their momentum going on defense as senior Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.) did well striking out the side to try and keep momentum going with Rockford up to bat.
The offense pulled through as the Regents went on to score four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a comfortable 6-2 lead of the Blue Angels. A fielding error and a single by Linzy Keller (Rockford, Ill.) gave Rockford Shannon LeGath (Sturtevant, Wis.) on second with Keller on first and no outs. Next up, Emily Johannes (Eau Claire, Wis.) smacked an RBI double to left center as Keller advanced to third. Gretchen Schrubbe followed suit to knock a nice RBI single to center and put Rockford up 4-2. McCathran Andrew joined the party crushing a double to left center that sent both Johannes and Schrubbe to home.
Rockford did well defensively as Mount Mary went on to only score two runs in the second and one in the sixth, as RU went on to win game one by a final score of 6-5. Abigail Wellwood did well in the circle for the Regents as she ended her final collegiate game in the circle with a win while striking out an impressive 8 batters.
On offense Gretchen Schrubbe led the way for the Regents going a solid 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. McCathran Andrew and Sammi Russell did their jobs bringing runs in as they each tallied 2 RBIs. In game one seven of the nine Rockford batters recorded a hit.
Game two started out similar to game one as the Blue Angels got out to another early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead on Rockford.
The Regents again came in clutch to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom half of the frame with six hits in the inning. Allison Kaiser (South Elgin, Ill.) got things started for RU as she singled to left field. Sammi Russell sent a laser into left field earning a double, and scoring Kaiser. Abigail Wellwood did well laying down a sacrifice bunt to advance Russell to third. Shannon LeGath knocked an RBI single to right field to continue the comeback. Linzy Keller kept the momentum going with a single to center field advancing LeGath to second. Emily Johannes followed with a single up the middle to load the bases for Rockford with one out. Gretchen Schrubbe came in clutch with a double down the left field line that scored all three base runners.
Mount Mary and Rockford remained tied as both teams earned a run in the fourth inning to keep the game tied at 6-6. LeGath did well to give Rockford a runner on as she singled to center field. Schrubbe brought in LeGath with a knock back up the middle to knot the game back up at 6-6.
The Blue Angels would not be phased as they went on to score five more runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-6 lead.
Rockford attempted to mount a comeback as it scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut it to an 11-8 game. Shannon LeGath got things started drawing a walk for Rockford to start off the inning. One out later, Emily Johannes reached first on a fielder's choice that saw LeGath out at second. Next up, Gretchen Schrubbe smashed an inside the park home run for Rockford.
The Regents could not make back any more runs as the Blue Angels scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to go on to win game two 13-8.
In game two the Regents were led by the duo of Gretchen Schrubbe and Shannon LeGath. Schrubbe finished game two going 3-for-4 with 6 RBIs and a run scored. Schrubbe was one RBI short of tying the single game record. Shannon LeGath finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
