ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (2-18, 0-6 NACC) faced off against a tough foe in the first place Marian University Sabres (16-6, 8-0 NACC) on Sunday Afternoon. The Regents did well in game one to keep it close until a big fifth inning propelled the Sabres to an 11-3 victory. Marian kept its bats going from the first game into the second as the Sabres came out swinging and never looked back. Hitting and pitching lead the Sabres to a 24-0 win in game two.

In game one the Sabres got out to an early 5-0 lead after scoring two in both the first and second inning as well as one in the third.

Rockford did well to stay in the game as it answered with a two-run bottom of the third to cut the lead to three. Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.) started things off for Rockford as she drew a walk. One batter latter, a groundout allowed Wellwood to reach second as the Regents were faced with two outs. Allison Kaiser (South Elgin, Ill.) and Brittany Bihun (Schaumburg, Ill.) did well to keep the run alive as they each drew a walk to load the bases for the Regents. Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) came through clutch for Rockford as she crushed a single to left field that scored Wellwood and Kaiser on the play to make the score 5-2.

However, Marian responded with a six-run fifth inning to take a commanding 11-2 lead over Rockford heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Rockford tried its best to get a rally going but could only come away with one run in the bottom of the frame. Gretchen Schrubbe (Elgin, Ill.) got things going as she started the inning off smashing a double into left field. One batter later, Brittany Bihun singled back up the middle to score Schrubbe. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Regents fell in game one 11-3.

Rockford was led by the trio of Alex Storey, Gretchen Schrubbe and Brittany Bihun in game one. Storey finished the game going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs in her first game of the season. Schrubbe recorded a double in the game, while Bihun tallied an RBI.

Game two was coupled by impressive hitting and pitching for the Sabres. The Sabres used big innings to help propel themselves for the win as they scored 5 in the first, 6 in the second, 4 in the third, 8 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth to win the game 24-0. Myranda Schuttenhelm was in the circle for the Sabres and pitched a shutout for her squad, while only giving up two hits.

The two hits for the Regents came off the bats of Gretchen Schrubbe and Abigail Wellwood as they each recorded a single.

The Rockford University softball team gets right back to action as it travels to take on Wisconsin Lutheran on Monday, April 9. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
