ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (2-12) faced off against the Lawrence University Vikings (5-10) on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, Rockford dropped both games against the Vikings falling 8-3 before losing the second the game 15-0.
Rockford got out to a slow start as it fell behind 7-0 early, heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Regents picked their game up defensively as they only surrendered one more run during the remaining of the game.
Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.) did well for Rockford as she entered the game in the top of the fifth. Wellwood went on to pitch 3 innings and only allowed one run and four hits in that span.
In the bottom of the fifth the Regents finally got on board as they attempted to crack into the Viking lead. Gretchen Schrubbe (Elgin, Ill.) got the ball rolling as she stepped to the plate to start the inning and ripped a triple into right center. One batter later, Brittany Bihun (Schaumburg, Ill.) was able to reach first due to an error by the second baseman, that also allowed Schrubbe to reach home. Rockford went into the top of the sixth starring at a 7-1 deficit.
Lawrence made up the run by Rockford in the bottom of the fifth as it answered with one of its own come the top of the sixth.
Rockford attempted a late game rally but could not get it done as the Regents scored two runs to make the final score 8-3. It was again Gretchen Schrubbe who started RU off, knocking a single to center field. Next up, Allison Kaiser (South Elgin, Ill.) reached first on a fielder's choice. Fortunately for Rockford an error by the Vikings allowed Schrubbe to be safe at second. Another error by the Vikings gave the Regents some hope as Brittany Bihun reached first on a fielder's choice, and an error sent Schrubbe all the way home and brought Kaiser to second. Next up, Sammi Russell (Winnebago, Ill.) singled through the left side and loaded the bases for the Regents with no outs. One batter later, Shannon LeGath (Sturtevant, Wis.) reached first on a fielder's choice and was able to bring home Kaiser. That was as far as the run would go as the Regents dropped game one 8-3.
Game two did not go the way Rockford had hoped as RU again got behind early and could not get its bats going. Rockford went into the bottom of the third already staring at 15-0 deficit as Lawrence scored 5 in the first, 7 in the second and 3 in the third.
Abigail Wellwood did well in relief again, as she entered in the top of the fourth and did not surrender another run in the game.
Emilia Jackson for Lawrence University was pitching very well in game two, which was a large reason why the Regents could not get anything going offensively. Jackson was pitching a no-hitter through the fourth inning, until Sammi Russell broke it up with a single to right field.
Rockford's best chance at getting on the scoreboard came in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Regents left two runners stranded. With one out, Abigail Wellwood gave the Regents a runner on as she singled into right field. Linzy Keller (Rockford, Ill.) was able to reach first on a fielder's choice as Wellwood was thrown out at second. Next up, Katlyn Fiorucci (Machesney Park, Ill.) singled toward the shortstop and advanced Keller to second. Unfortunately, this was as far as Rockford could get as they dropped game two by a final score of 15-0.
The Rockford University softball team gets right back to action as they return to the field Friday, March 30. The Regents begin NACC play as they host Lakeland, with first pitch set for 2 PM.
