KENOSHA, Wis. - In the penultimate meet of the season for the Regents on Friday, the RU indoor track and field teams had yet another outstanding showing with multiple individuals setting new personal bests as well as breaking one school record. In total there were seven individuals who set personal bests, including Tyrece Ahrens (Kankakee, Ill.) who broke his own school record in the triple jump. Ahrens jump of 12.73 meters was 0.25 meters farther than his previous record and was good enough to earn him a seventh place finish at the Carthage Final Qualifier on Friday.
Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) tied for the highest finish of any Regent on Friday as each took fifth in their respective event. Werkheiser placed fifth in the 400 meter run crossing the finish line in 54.28 seconds, while Devant took fifth in the mile run finishing the race in a personal best time of 4:36.79.
Jesus Campos (Chicago, Ill.) and Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) both set personal bests on Friday as well. Campos set a new personal best in the preliminaries of the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds before finishing seventh in the finals. Newton also set a new personal best in the mile run when he crossed the finish line in 4:56.80 to place eighteenth.
Nathan Alldritt (Winnebago, Ill.), Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.), Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) and Devon Lawrence (Loves Park, Ill.) were the other four Regents to participate in field events. Alldritt took eighth in the pole vault with a height of 3.85 meters, Johnson finished seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 13.31 meters, Ponce Cuiriz took ninth in the weight throw with a personal best distance of 11.99 meters and Lawrence placed fifteenth in the shot put with a throw of 10.55 meters.
On the women's side it was the trio of Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.), Katrina Kopfhamer (Portage, Wis) and Virginia Reed (Rockford, Ill.) who led the way in the field events. Terry had the highest finish of the day as she took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.18 meters. She also participated in the weight throw where she placed fifteenth with a distance of 12.79 meters. Kopfhamer set a new personal best in the weight throw with a distance of 11.90 meters, and Reed took fourteenth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.03 meters.
Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) was the final Regent to run at Carthage on Friday. Collins set a new personal best in the 400 meter race and placed sixth when she crossed the finish line in 1.07.22.
The Regents indoor track and field teams will conclude their seasons on Saturday, March 3 at the Pointer Final Qualifier.
