LOVES PARK, Ill. - The RU men's soccer team took to the field indoors tonight due to weather, as they faced off against Marian University. The first half would be back-and-forth as the Regents outshot the Sabres 5 to 4 with no goals scored by either side. Both teams would find the back of the net in the second half as regulation ended 2-2. It would not be until the second overtime that Marian would get the game winning goal.
The game would not see its first goal until 22 minutes into the second half. Rockford took the lead off a Fernando Mercado (Harvard, Ill.) goal. Mercado notched his first goal of the season as he buried a bouncing ball in the box off a corner kick. It would be just 5 minutes later that Marian would find the equalizer and put the score at 1-1. That did not phase the Regent attack as they went down the field to score just 46 seconds later. Erik Manriquez (Rockford, Ill.) lined up for a free kick from 40 yards out and sent the ball into the box. He connected with Todd Alberts (Davenport, Iowa) who headed it to Jose Ortega (Round Lake, Ill.) who used his head to give the Regents the 2-1 lead. It seemed as though Rockford was going to win, until Marian scored with less than 2 minutes to go in the game.
The game would continue on until the second overtime. Unfortunately, Rockford would end up on the losing side. Marian would score the game winner with just under 5 minutes to play in the final overtime.
RU men's soccer team returns to the field Wednesday, October 18 as they host Edgewood College for senior night. The match is scheduled for a 7 PM start time.
