Rockford Cannot Close Out Wisconsin Lutheran

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action today to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents have won three of their last four games and have shot the ball over 50% in those games. Rockford shot well in the game tonight, from the field and free throw line, but were unable to close out Wisconsin Lutheran as they fell 94-93. 

In the first half both teams began by playing great defense as the score was 19-16 with 9:45 remaining in the half, with Rockford leading. The Regents and Warriors were locked in a stalemate for the rest of the half, as there were 11 lead changes in the final nine minutes of the half. Ultimately, the Warriors hit a buzzer beating three-point shot to take the lead 50-49 at halftime. Rockford shot 48.4% from the field and Wisconsin Lutheran shot 50.0%. The Regents were converting on their free throw attempts going 14-of-16 from the stripe, for an 87.5% clip. Both teams made five three-pointers in the half. Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) led Rockford with 14 points and 7 rebounds. 

Rockford jumped out of the gates in the second half with an 18-8 run to take a 67-58 lead with 12:30 remaining. Freshman Kivontay Shaw (Galesburg, Ill.) powered the Regents run with 10 points. Methodically, Wisconsin Lutheran battled back into the game as they tied the game up at 85 with three minutes left in the game. Both teams traded baskets until the Warriors hit a two-point jump shot with :08 seconds remaining to take a 94-92 lead. Rockford had one more chance as Wallace was fouled sending him to the free throw line where he made the first free throw and missed the second with :00.3 seconds remaining. The Regents fell by the final of 94-93. Rockford shot 49.2% from the field and 25-of-29 from the free throw line, good for an 86% clip.

Leading Rockford offensively were Zach Wallace with another outstanding game scoring 25 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and tallying 3 blocks. Wallace was 7-of-8 from the free throw stripe. Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) was a force adding 24 points with 7 rebounds. Kivontay Shaw had 13 points and 5 rebounds. Ben Temrowski (Rochester, Mich.) posted 11 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. 

The Rockford University men's basketball team will return to action Saturday, December 31 against Lakeland University in Sheboygan, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 4:15 p.m.
