Debbie Patterson attended Rockford College from 1975-1979, where she excelled in three sports, Field Hockey, Volleyball and Basketball. She was dominant in Field Hockey where she was a three-year letterwinner. Patterson led the team in goals (13) and assists (6) in 1977, no other player amassed six goals on the team. She was named Team Captain and Most Valuable Player in 1977 and 1979. In 1979 she notched the season record for most goals, assists, and total points. Patterson was a letterwinner in volleyball and basketball as well. She was named the Team Captain of the basketball team in 1978 and Most Valuable Player in 1977-1978.
The accolades continued to roll in as she received the Female Athlete-of-the-Year Award in 1977, 1978, and 1979. Also, she won the Wolpe Student Athlete-of-the-Year award in 1978. She was awarded the President's Cup in 1979. Patterson became the second Field Hockey inductee into the Hall of Fame in 1986.
