ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team fell in straight sets to both Maranatha Baptist University and Illinois Tech this Saturday during the Rockford Triangular. Rockford lost its opener 25-8, 25-13 , and 25-20 to Maranatha before falling 25-23, 25-17, and 25-14 to Illinois Tech.
In RU's opener against the Sabercats, the Regents started off slow but continued to make progress throughout the match. Rockford had two players record at least five kills. Emily Johannes (Eau Claire, Wis.) led the team once again with 9 kills while Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa) recorded 7 of her own. Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas) was extraordinary in setting up the offense as she tallied 20 of the Regents' 23 assists. Defensively Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.) put together a nice game with 12 digs.
Following their loss to Maranatha, the Regents returned to the court to square off against the Scarlet Hawks. Rockford carried its momentum from the last set of its first game as the set went back and forth, but ultimately fell 25-23. RU was led by Johannes and Libby Malenchik (Rockford, Ill.) who each tallied 6 kills. Barthels had another stellar game, posting a double-double. Barthels was able to help offensively with 12 assists, while also contributing on the defensive side of the ball with a team-high 13 digs. Quintas again helped out with 10 digs of her own.
The Rockford University volleyball team returns to the court on Tuesday, September 26 against Beloit at the Seaver Center. The match has a scheduled start time of 7 PM.
