MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The RU women's soccer team played its second road match in as many days on Saturday when the Regents squared off against the Iowa Wesleyan University Tigers. Rockford was in control from start to finish outshooting the Tigers 22-12 and scoring 6 goals in the first half before cruising to a 7-0 win.
Rockford built itself a nice lead early scoring a trio of goals in the first eleven minutes. Senior Giovana Ortega (Rockford, Ill.) broke the scoreless tie in the fifth minute when she found the back of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Regents a 1-0 lead. Rockford continued to pepper the net over the next six minutes scoring two more goals and extending its lead to 3-0. Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) made it 2-0 when she netted first goal of the season. Ortega then made it 3-0 as she scored her second goal of the match.
Despite holding an early 3-0 lead, Rockford continued to put pressure on Iowa Wesleyan adding three more goals and taking a 6-0 lead into the intermission. Lexie Collins scored for the second time in the match in the 26th minute as the Regents made it a 4-0 game. Rockford's final two goals of the half came off the foot of Erin Disanti (Rockford, Ill.) and Jessivel Uribe (Round Lake, Ill.).
The Regents would add one additional goal late in the second half when Ortega completed the hat-trick with her third goal of the match as the Regents coasted to an easy 7-0 victory.
Defensively Rockford played extremely well smothering the Tiger attack and recording its first shutout of the season. RU goalkeeper Drew Garcia (Victoria, Texas) was a wall inside the net making three saves and earning her first collegiate shutout.
The RU women's soccer team returns to the field on Monday, September 4 for its home opener against the University of Minnesota Morris. Kickoff is set for 3 PM at Wedgbury Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.
