Regents Score First Win of Season
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Hungry for its first win of the season, the Regents women's soccer team took the field with purpose on Saturday afternoon against the Finlandia University Lions. In last year's meeting between the two teams, the Regents defeated the Lions 8-0. However, Rockford knew it was going to be a close game as the Regents had lost 22 straight matches before Saturday's contest. The Regents dominated every statistical category against the Lions. Rockford took more than double the number of shots as Finlandia (11-5) and took three times as many corner kicks (6-2). Most importantly, the Regents won the match 3-1 picking up their first win in 2012.
Just as the men's team had done earlier in the afternoon, the ladies controlled the pace of play and were clearly the aggressor in the first half. Danika Mollway (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) got the Regents on the board first scoring her first goal of the season. Mollway dribbled the ball up the left side of the field and used a precision shot placing the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net giving Rockford a 1-0. Rockford would take six additional shots in the first half but was unable to convert any of them into goals entering halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The second half featured a lot more scoring the first. Finlandia would strike first tying the match a 1-1 less than five minutes into the second half. The score would remain tied until midway though the half when Rockford caught break. Rockford would regain the lead when Mollway fired a rocket towards the Finlandia goalkeeper that skipped off the goalie and crawled into the goal making it a 2-1 Regents lead. It was Mollway's second goal of the game and of the season. Alyssa Baggio (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) sealed the win scoring her first goal of the season with only 90 seconds remaining the match giving Rockford a 3-1 victory.
The ladies will return to the field on October 17th at 4:00 p.m. when they host the Alverno College Inferno at Sam Greeley Field.
