Rockford Runs Away From Edgewood In The Final Two Periods

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action today to take on Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were looking to earn their fifth NACC victory on the season. Rockford was able to dominate Edgewood in the second half outscoring them 46-23. Ultimately, the Regents won by the final of 72-54.

The Regents jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after Casey Pettit (Rockford, Ill.) drilled a three-point basket with nine minutes remaining in the quarter. Edgewood then went on an 18-10 run to end the first quarter with a 20-15 lead. Leading the Regents in the opening period was Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.)  with 6 points.

Rockford jumped out to a quick 6-0 run to begin the second quarter to take the lead 21-20 with nine minutes remaining. After the Regents had stretched their lead to 26-21, the Eagles responded with their own 6-0 run to retake the lead 27-26 with just under three minutes remaining in the second period. Edgewood extended their lead at the half leading by the score of 31-26. May leads Rockford with 10 points at the half.

After Rockford fell behind 40-31, they responded with a 16-4 run to take the lead 47-44 with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Regents extended their lead to 52-44 to end the third quarter. Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) and Nicole Silvers led Rockford with 8 points each in the quarter. Taylor May added 7 points in the quarter. The Regents doubled their point total at the half by scoring 26 points in third period. 

In the final quarter the Regents turned up their defensive pressure to force the Eagles to turn the ball over six times. Rockford was able to force Edgewood to 22 turnovers for the game. With their increased pressure the Regents were able to extend their lead to 20 points, 72-52 with just over one minute remaining. Ultimately, Rockford won by the final of 72-54. The Regents were stellar from the three-point line converting on 8-of-16 attempts. 

Leading Rockford for the game were Taylor May scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Nicole SIlvers was terrific adding 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Silvers knocked down four three-point baskets. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. Lexie Collins posted 11 points off the bench including shooting 3-of-4 from the three-point line. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) tallied 10 points, 8 steals, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. 

The Rockford University women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday, February 7 to take on Alverno College at the Seaver Center with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
