AURORA, Ill. - The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams ran in their second races of the season on Friday at the Spartan Classic. The Regents continued to build upon their momentum from last week as they once again turned in numerous excellent performances despite not recording a team score. Individually Rockford had a trio of runners set new personal bests.
All three members of the women's team recorded personal best times in the 6k as each Regent shattered their old mark. Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) was the top finisher for the women placing 67th out of 117 runners. Collins also set a new personal best in the 6k with a time of 27:00.2, which was almost 2 minutes faster than her previous best. Senior Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) placed 99th and also recorded a new personal best when she crossed the finish line in 31:18.8. Her time on Friday was a minute lower than her previous fastest in a 6k race. Tracy Wang (Lianyungang, China) was the final female Regent to participate in the race. Wang placed 104th and set a new personal best when she crossed the finish line in 32:00.2, breaking her previous best mark by nearly four minutes.
The men's team had a trio of individuals run, all of which turned in excellent performances. Junior Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) was the top overall finisher for Rockford on Friday placing 47th and crossing the finish line in 27:50.6. Fellow junior Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) also ran well as he finished the 8k race in 29:05.5 to place 80th out of 143 total runners. The final RU runner on the men's team was Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.). Newton ran the 8k in 29:24.5 to finish in 90th place.
The RU cross country teams return to action in two weeks at the Brissman-Lundeen Invite. The first race is set to begin at 5:45 PM.
