LISLE, Ill. - The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams each returned to competition on Friday afternoon at the Eagle Invitational. This was one of the largest meets of the year thus far for Rockford with the men's race featuring 177 runners and the women's race featuring 195 runners. The RU men's team finished in 13th place while the women did not record a team score. Despite the strong competition, it was a great day for Rockford as four Regents set new personal bests and an additional three posted season-best times.
The top individual performance of the day came from sophomore Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.). Devant placed 33rd with a season-best time of 27:50.3. Out of the 177 total runners, Devant had the 7th fastest time amongst all NACC participants.
Sophomore Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and senior John Finley (Rockford, Ill.) came in 65th and 85th respectively. Werkheiser set a new personal best time as he crossed the finish line in 28:54.6 and Finley finished the race with a season-best time of 29:40.9.
Rockford's four remaining runners on the men's side were Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.), Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.), Maxi Herrera-Herrera (Rockford, Ill.) and Kyle Roewer (Belvidere, Ill.). Noel and Newton finished just one spot apart placing 111th and 112th respectively. Noel recorded a personal best time finishing the race in 30:45.0 and Newton had a season-best time of 30:46.6. Herrera-Herrera finished in 141st place crossing the finish line in 32:32.8, while Roewer recorded a personal best time of 35:14.6 to finish in 162nd place.
Junior Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) was the lone participant for the women's team on Friday. Buechner recorded a personal best time of 32:18.8 and finished in 180th place.
The RU cross country teams return to competition next Friday, October 14 at the Loras Invite.
