MEQUON, Wis. - The RU men's and women's cross country teams continued their seasons on Saturday at the CUW Ken Weidt Classic. While this is Rockford's second meet of the season, it is the first time this year the men have ran an 8k race and the women a 6k race. As a team the Rockford men placed 8th, while the women did not record a team score.
Sophomore Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) had another stellar performance as he led the pack for Rockford. Devant crossed the finish line in 28:16.6 to place 25th out of 116 total participants. His 25th place finish is 12 spots higher than last year at the Ken Weidt Classic when he placed 37th.
Senior John Finley (Rockford, Ill.) and sophomore Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) also ran well as each improved upon their results from last year. Finley placed 86th with a time of 32:18.5, which was 9 spots better than one year ago when he finished in 95th place. Werkheiser had perhaps the most impressive performance as he set a personal best in the 8k with a time of 29:58.7 to finish 53rd, which is 55 spots higher than last year.
Freshmen Maxi Herrera-Herrera (Rockford, Ill.) and Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.) and sophomore Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) all ran well on Saturday. Herrera-Herrera recorded the top finish among the three as he placed 69th with a time of 30:49.4. Newton finished in 78th place with a time of 31:25.9, while Noel placed 89th as he crossed the finish line in 32:25.3.
Sophomore Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) and freshman Tracy Wang (Lianyungang, China) were the two Regents to compete for the women's team. Buechner crossed the finish line in 33:47.2 to finish in 120th place, which is 22 spots higher than last year. Wang, in her first collegiate race, placed 126th with a time of 35:59.0.
The RU cross country teams return to action on Saturday, September 24 at the Olde English Meet. The meet will be held at Leeson Park in Beloit, Wis. with an 11:00 AM start time.
