ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford University head men's and women's cross country and track & field coach Kyle Ekberg has announced his resignation from the position effective at the end of May. Ekberg has led each of the programs for the past four seasons since being hired in the summer of 2013.
"After months of careful thought, I have decided to step aside as head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track & field teams here at Rockford University in order to invest more of myself into my family life," Ekberg stated. "There is never a good time to leave coaching but I felt now was the time. I will miss coaching at Rockford University and the strong relationships I have made over the past four years. I am proud of the foundation we have built as a team and I am hopeful for what the future holds."
Ekberg leaves Rockford after having reinvigorated both the track & field and cross country programs over the past four years. During his tenure, the RU track and field programs set or broke a total of 49 school records and recorded some of the team's top finishes at both the NACC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The cross country program had four all-conference performers with Ekberg at the helm as he led both programs to their best finishes at the NACC Championships since the 2011 season.
"I want to say thank you to all the student-athletes I have had the joy to work with. Thank you for showing up with a positive attitude and ready to work hard," Ekberg remarked. "Thank you for devoting your time and energy to this team. Thank you for practicing during hot summer mornings, cold winter evenings and every condition in-between. You have helped me solidify my passion for coaching and my love of cross country and track & field."
Over the past four years, Ekberg's student-athletes have received some of the highest honors possible at Rockford University. During that time, he had three individuals voted Rockford University Female Athlete of the Year and one voted Rockford University Male Freshman of the Year.
"Finally, I would also like to thank the Rockford University athletic department for giving me this opportunity to coach. The experiences I have gained will be invaluable to my future career. I wish Rockford University the very best. Go Regents!"
"I would like to thank Coach Ekberg for his time and dedication to the Rockford University athletic department over the past four years," Rockford University Interim Director of Athletics Bob Koopmann stated. "Kyle has been an integral part of our staff during his time here, and we wish him all the best on his future endeavors."
A search for a new men's and women's cross country and track & field coach will begin in the near future.
