ROCKFORD, Ill. - The men's soccer team played in front of its home crowd Saturday afternoon in a NACC match up against MSOE. The Regents played its best game of the season offensively, unfortunately it was not enough. The Raiders managed to squeak out a victory 4-3.
The Raiders got onto the board first as they headed one in 13:26 into the game. It did not take long for the Regents to answer back as freshman Andres Alberts (Atlanta, Ill.) scored his first career goal as he placed the ball into the far left side of the net, just 28 seconds later. RU carried that momentum as they scored at 17:38. Alonzo Carrillo (Harvard, Ill.) gave Rockford the lead as he took on a defender and put it away off a Brandon Oeltjenbruns (Arvada, Colo.) assist. RU would have the lead for the majority of the first until MSOE tied the game with just 1:17 left in the half. Both teams talked offense at half, as the scoring started early once again. Freshman Jose Ortega (Round Lake, Ill.) gave RU the lead off his first collegiate goal just 44 seconds into the second half. Ortega outjumped the defender and found the back of the net off of a nice cross from Oeltjenbruns. The Raiders would answer back just as quick to tie the game at 3-3, 40 seconds later. The game would continue to go back and forth until 58:41 when the Raiders would score what would be the game winning goal. RU continued to fight until the last seconds ticked off the clock, unfortunately they were not able to find the equalizer before time expired.
The Rockford University men's soccer team returns to action as they take on Aurora at home on Wednesday, October 4. The match is scheduled for 4 PM.
