MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The RU men's soccer team played the second game of its four-game road trip on Saturday against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. Although the Regents fell by a final score of 4-1, the match was much closer then that. The Tigers only held a 10-8 edge in shots on goal, but were able to convert on four of their ten chances compared to Rockford converting on just one of its eight opportunities.
The first half was all Tigers as Iowa Wesleyan scored a trio of goals before halftime. Iowa Wesleyan broke the scoreless tie less than eight minutes into the match to grab an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers added two more goals in the eighteenth and twenty-seventh minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Iowa Wesleyan would tack on one additional goal before Rockford finally broke through in the final minute of the match. Junior Bailey Beard (Rockford, Ill.) scored his second goal of the season off a rebound in front of the net to put the Regents on the board. Unfortunately it was not enough as Rockford fell by a final of 4-1.
RU goalkeeper Edgar Gomez (Belvidere, Ill.) played extremely well in his forty-five minutes in goal. Gomez allowed just one goal in the second half while making five saves.
The RU men's soccer team returns to the field on Wednesday, September 20 for its NACC opener at Dominican University. The match has a scheduled start time of 4:00 PM.
