Loves Park, Ill.- The Rockford University men's soccer team showed promise in its first home action of the season on Saturday against the Fontbonne University Griffins. However the Fontbonne attack proved to be too much for the Regents as the Griffins came out on top by a final score of 3-1.
Fontbonne took the lead early in the first half scoring just 2:21 into the game. Following the Griffin goal, the Regents picked up their play and started possessing the ball in the attacking end. Midway through the half it paid off for the Regents as a hectic play in the box resulted in a goal. After a foul by a Fontbonne defender, Erik Manriquez (Rockford, Ill) took a free kick from outside the goalie box near the sideline and swung the ball in front of the goal to Omar Rivas (Capron, Ill.) who connected on a shot that hit off the crossbar and rebounded back in front of the net. Bailey Beard (Rockford, Ill.) was in perfect position as he managed to head the ball past a sprawled Fontbonne keeper for his first goal of the season to knot the game at one.
Unfortunately RU fell victim to playing two games in as many days with fatigue starting to set in as the game wore on. Fontbonne proceeded to score two more goals, one right before the end of the first half, and the other shortly into the second. However, the Regents continued to play hard and put pressure on the Griffins, but were unable to cut into the Fontbonne lead and ultimately fell by a final score of 3-1.
The Rockford University men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, September 5 when the Regents travel to Maranatha to take on the Sabercats. Kickoff is set for 4 PM in Watertown, Wis.
