ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team (5-7, 3-4 NACC) took to the court against the Marian University Sabres (5-7, 4-3 NACC) on Wednesday night. The Regents did well scoring on the night, however the Sabres blistering shooting percentage in the first half was too much for Rockford to come back from. The Regents trailed by 27 points with just 7 minutes remaining in the game but never gave up. RU dug deep and scored 28 points in the remainder of the game but could not come away with the win as the Sabres walked away with a 91-83 victory.
The first half Marian came out strong and never looked back. MU put together a solid effort on the offensive side of the ball as Marian scored 54 points while shooting 60.6% from the floor. Senior Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.) was able to help keep the game close as he recorded 20 points in the first half on 8-of-12 shooting. Blumhorst also helped defensively tallying 3 of his 4 blocks during the first half. Sophomore Ben Weber (South Beloit, Ill.) contributed 9 points, shooting 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. A difference in the game was the bench play between the two sides. Marian outscored Rockford's bench a staggering 29-to-0 in the first half. The Regents would go into the half trailing 54-36.
The second half went much better offensively for Rockford. The Regents outscored the Sabres 47-37 due to big second half performances from multiple players. Weber continued to shoot well as he went 3-for-5 from deep in the second half. Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) also played well as he scored 13 of his 15 points during the second half and recording all 7 of his rebounds. Andrew Squires (Pecatonica, Ill.) did well with the time he was given on the court as he scored all 12 of the bench points for Rockford in the half. Squires also found a rhythm as he knocked down 2-of-3 from deep while finishing 5-for-7 from the floor. Rockford outshot Marian 46.2% compared to 39.4% during the second half of play.
There were four Rockford players who managed to score in double figures on the night. Trae Blumhorst led the way for the Regents tallying a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Blumhorst also recorded 4 blocks and 3 steals. Ben Weber played well as he came up one rebound short of a double-double. Weber scored 24 points while going 5-of-8 from deep as well as chalking up 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Tony Diemer finished the night with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Andrew Squires scored a career-high 12 points coming off the bench along with 4 rebounds.
The Rockford University men's basketball team returns to action when it hosts Aurora on Saturday, January 6. Tip-off is set for 2 PM.
