ADRIAN, Mich. - The Rockford University football team hit the road for the second time in three weeks on Saturday when the Regents traveled East to take on the Adrian College Bulldogs. It was a difficult day for the Regents as the Bulldogs were in control from the opening kickoff on. Adrian led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter before taking a 35-0 advantage into halftime. The second half did not go much better as Adrian scored the first 27 points en route to a 62-7 win.
Rockford was able to put together one late touchdown drive to avoid being shutout. The Regents used 5 plays to cover 75 yards and took just 2 minutes and 12 seconds off the clock. Freshman running back LaVar Johnson Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) carried the ball four straight times to begin the drive racking up 29 yards as Rockford moved into the Adrian half of the field. Freshman quarterback Delayno Mack (Loves Park, Ill.) took it from there, connecting with freshman wide receiver Phillip Robinson (Hazel Crest, Ill.) on a 46-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Alexis Guteirrez (Amboy, Ill.) added the extra point to stay perfect on the season. Guteirrez also had an excellent day punting, averaging 46.0 yards per kick with a long of 57 yards.
Defensively the Regents had five players record at least 10 tackles. Jallen Bashford (Fairbury, Ill.) and Dylan Peterson (Reynolds, Ill.) both set career-highs with 14 and 13 tackles respectively. Freshmen Austin Carlson (Hanover Park, Ill.) and Chase Ferree (Crown Point, Ind.) each had 11 tackles, while Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.) tallied 10 tackles.
The RU football team is off next week before returning home on Saturday, September 30 to play NACC foe Benedictine University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at Sam Greeley Field.
