EJ Johnson Scoops up NAC Weekly Award

ROCKFORD, Ill. – On Monday evening the Northern Athletics Conference released its weekly football awards for the week ending November 2, 2012 and for the third time in 2012 a Regent was selected as a NAC Football Student-Athlete of the Week. Junior defensive back EJ Johnson (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) was named the Northern Athletics Conference Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week. Johnson becomes the third member of the Regents football team to receive a weekly honor from the NAC this season. Rockford has now won a NAC Student-Athlete of the Week Award on offense, defensive and special teams for the first time ever in the same season. The team's three NAC Weekly Awards in 2012 is also the most the Regents have received in a single season since the conference was formed for football in the fall of 2008.

After a defensive struggle through the first quarter and part of the second quarter, cornerback EJ Johnson came up with a huge play to give Rockford the lead and break a 0-0 tie on Saturday. Johnson scooped up a blocked field attempt and took it 80 yards for the game's first score. In addition to his stellar play on special teams, the junior has also played an integral role in the Regents defense. The Bakersfield native has essentially been a shutdown cornerback for Rockford the entire. On Saturday, Johnson intercepted two more passes and broke up two additional passes. He now leads the NAC with seven interceptions and is second in the conference with nine pass breakups.

The Regents return home on Saturday for their final game of the 2012 when they welcome the Aurora University Spartans to Sam Greeley Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
